Tokubetsu Hozon

While there are many Sue Bizen smiths with variants of Sukesada in their names, Yosozaemonnojo Sukesada has a particularly large number of outstanding works. This piece was done by the first of two generations of smiths, and based on ax existing tanto with an inscribed date of 1537 (6th year of Tenbun) and his age of 71, it can be calculated that this piece was done when Sukesada was 56 years old.
This piece features a fine koitame grain with minute jinie and chikei. The hamon is a broad gunome mixing smaller gunome and togariba, ashi, yo, nioi gachi with small nie, and sunagashi. The nie in the ji and the ha, and the bright nioiguchi complement this excellent piece.
The accompanying koshirae likely dates from the late Edo period, and well adds to the noble appearance of this double edged tanto.
