Among the numerous Osafune swordsmiths of the late Muromachi period who signed the name Sukesada, three are particularly esteemed for the exceptional quality of their workmanship Hikobeno Jo Sukesada, Yosazaemon no Jo Sukesada, and Genbe no Jo Sukesada. Hikobe no Jo is traditionally regarded as the father of Yosazaemon no Jo.
This sword is a classic example of a late Muromachi one-handed (Uchigatana).
The Jihada consists of a finely forged ko-Itame grain with a distinct Midare-Utsuri. The Hamon is an elegant mixture of Choji and Gunome, richly enlivened with abundant Ashi and Yo, creating a brilliant and lively temper pattern.
Both the steel surface and the hardened edge are exceptionally bright and clear, representing one of Hikobe no Jo Sukesada's finest works.
The accompanying Koshirae is equally distinguished. According to the inscription on the Sayagaki by Kawase Torasaburo, known by the art name Ifudo, the Menuki are peony ornaments crafted by the celebrated metal artist Omori Teruhide. Together, the mountings possess both elegance and refined dignity, making them a fitting complement to this outstanding blade.
