Ono Yoshimitsu had a strong interest in swords since his youth and began studying under the swordsmith Yoshihara Yoshindo in 1969. He continued his training while attending Nihon University until 1976. He received an honorary award for his work in 1975, and would go on to achieve several accolades including receiving the Takamatsunomiya Award in 1984 for four consecutive years. He was recognized with the esteemed Mukansa Tosho designation in 1987. His works are best known for his signature “Ono choji,” a vivid elaborate form of Juka Choji tempering.
This work was forged in Bizen and displays an elaborate Choji and Gunome combination. The unique construction is reminiscent of Kagemitsu from the late Kamakura period, and incorporates a thick Kasane width.
