Signed works by Nawaie are extremely rare, making this wakizashi particularly valuable as a historical and scholarly reference. Given its date, Nawaie is thought to have had close connections with such prominent Bizen Osafune smiths as Morimitsu and Yasumitsu.
The Jigane is composed primarily of Itame-Hada with mixed Mokume-Hada, displaying a welldeveloped, active grain. It is richly covered with Ji-Nie, with numerous Chikei appearing throughout the steel. The Hamon consists of Gunome with an open lower portion, mixed Gunome and Notare, with prominent Kinsuji and Sunagashi. The blade is in excellent condition, and its workmanship is of particularly high quality.
The accompanying koshirae is finished in an eggshell textured lacquer technique, in which eggshell fragments are applied to the surface, lacquered over, and then polished to reveal the distinctive texture. Such surviving examples are themselves rarely encountered and are of considerable interest.
Both the Wakizashi and its accompanying Koshirae are accompanied by NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certificates, making this a particularly rare and valuable surviving example, both as a sword and as a complete sword-mounting ensemble.
