Together with Kanesada (Nosada), Kanemoto exemplified the Mino smiths of the late Muromachi period. While there were many generations of Kanemoto, the second generation, also known as Magoroku Kanemoto was most renown for his skill. Kanemoto's signature trait is a type of togari gunome hamon referred to as sanbonsugi.
This piece shows a flowing grain with itame and mokume, jinie, chikei, and a hamon incorporating sanbonsugi with togari, gunome, nioi and konie. This sword is well done, with a bright base and temper, and well illustrates the characteristics of Magoroku Kanemoto. The accompanying black lacquer aikuchi koshirae further elevates the elegance.
