NBTHK 19th Juyo Token designation

The Awataguchi School was renown in the early Kamakura period for the outstanding skill of Kunitomo and his five younger brothers. The third brother Kuniyasu, also known as Tosaburo, was one of the Gotobain smiths for April together with his older brothers Kunitomo and Hisakuni. Extant pieces by Kuniyasu are primarily Tachi and Katana, and only two confirmed Tanto are currently known to exist, one signed and one unsigned.
This work combines an itame grain mixing faint Masame with a Suguha Hamon exhibiting Hotsure and Uichigaiba, and is an exceptionally healthy example of the refined skill of Kuniyasu.
The accompanying Koshirae is elegantly done incorporating the Kirimon paulownia crest, which is also carved into the gold Habaki.
