Kanetsune was a representative smith of the Mino Tradition active for several generations from the Muromachi Period through the era of Shinto swords. This piece is likely a work from the Tenmon era, and displays Kanetsune's signature Suguha tempering with a bright Nioiguchi, and an Itame grain mixing Mokume with much Jinie. The work draws parallels with the Rai School, and attests to Kanetsune's technical prowess. The accompanying Koshirae is elegantly done with the Aoi crest in Makie on an undulating pattered Saya. According to the Sayagaki by Honnami Nisshu, the provenance is tied to the Owari Tokugawa family.
