Chikanobu is referenced in the Meikan only as a smith in Bizen prior to the Genreki period with a two character signature, indicative of the rarity of extant pieces. Although the Meikan notes the period as Genreki, it is likely Chikanobu was active in the early Kamakura period.
This piece is relatively wide with a robust construction, a flowing pronounced itame grain, and a hamon mixing Notare and Gunome with ashi, Sunagashi and a bright nioguchi with konie. It is in fine condition, and an excellent and rare example of Chikanobu's work.
The sword is accompanied by an elegant koshirae dating from the late Edo period.
