Yagyu tsuba originated with the fourth generation head of the Owari Yagyu family, Renya, who ordered the production of Tsubas which best met the Yagyu fighting techniques.
This piece features a wave pattern in relief and a bold cut-out depiction of a boat sail. The motif likely relates to naval techniques leveraging tailwinds, and the idea of following the wind alludes to a core fighting philosophy.
The simple and bold execution in fine iron make for an outstanding example among Yagyu Tsuba.
