The Umetada family boasts a lineage in service of the Ashikaga Shogunate and were renown for their work producing Habaki, sword fittings, Horimono carvings, and Suriage in addition to production of swords.They also served the Toyotomi and Tokugawa families as well as a number of Daimyo making them one of the most representative schools of the Momoyama period.
Although unsigned, this work is attributed to the Umetada family and is an exceptional and large execution of a mantis and mushroom reflecting the aesthetics of the Momoyama culture.
