Together with Ichinomiya Nagatsune and Otsuki Mitsuoki, the first generation Tetsugendo Shoraku was counted among the three greatest Kyoto metal craftsmen. His Original name was Okamoto Genbei Toshiyuki and he signed his early work with Naoshige before using the artistic name Shoraku after entering the priesthood. He is particularly well regarded for his ability to use iron.
This work exemplifies Shoraku’s skill and humor depicting a traveler to the Todaiji Temple in Nara as he crawls through a pillar – a practice still continued today by visitors seeking a long and prosperous life and to excel in school. It is said the hole in the pillar is the same size as the nostril of the buddha.
