The first generation Tetsugendo Shoraku was a metal craftsman in Kyoto with the original name Okamoto Genbei Toshiyuki. He often signed his work with the artistic name Naoshige, and was well regarded for his ability to work with iron. This piece is a unique human depiction of a sudden rainstorm, showing people running for shelter and covering their ears as thunder roars. Executed on an iron base with highly skilled takabori and inlay, this is a prime example of Shoraku’s work.
