Tanabe Bansho, also known as Eizo, was born in Edo as the son of Buneiken Tomonao. He first studied under his father before apprenticing under Yanagawa Naoharu. This piece reflects the classy aesthetic of Edo, incorporating takabori on a shibuichi nanako base with openwork depicting mist. Tsubas by Bansho are very rare, and this excellent work was listed in a 1935 auction catalog for the Maruyama family.
