Taizan Mototada initially used the art name Motoharu, later changing it to Mototada in his mature years. He trained and cultivated many accomplished disciples. During his time in Edo studying artistic techniques, he learned the carving style of the Nara school, and produced works influenced by such masters as Yokoya Somin and Soyo, demonstrating a remarkably broad range of carving techniques.
In his later years, he entered the Buddhist priesthood and adopted the name Togu. He was
exceptionally long-lived, said to have reached 90 years of age or more.
This work is carved in usunikubori on an iron plate, depicting pine trees, with the rising sun rendered in gold inlay. Although simple in composition, the work clearly demonstrates Mototada's refined artistic sensibility and exceptional technical skill.
