The Akasaka tradition of tsubas emerged in the early Edo period, and likely started with a group of artisans who moved from Kyoto to the Akasaka district of Edo, thus the name. Along with Kyo, Owari, and Higo, the school is representative of iron sukashi tsuba. Works by the first three generations of masters are all unsigned. This piece is attributed to the second master Tadamasa, and shows characteristic traits as a strong maru mimi, a protruded seppadai, and well produced iron. It is an excellent piece showing signature aspects of the second master.
