Together with Ichinomiya Nagatsune and Otsuki Mitsuoki, the first generation Tetsugendo Shoraku was counted among the three greatest Kyoto metal craftsmen. His original name was Okamoto Genbei Toshiyuki and he signed his early work with Naoshige before using the artistic name Shoraku after entering the priesthood. He is particularly well regarded for his ability to use iron.
This piece is unique for Shoraku employing colored metails and inlay on a shibuichi base in a remarkable depiction of the Gojogen battle. The superb attention to detail is testament to Shoraku's outstanding skill.
