Katsurano Sekibun was born in Echigo Murakami in 1790 and trained in his youth under the Hamano family. Judging by his artistic name Yurakusai, it is also likely that he studied in Kyoto. In 1824, he became an artisan for the Sakai family of the Shonai clan. In 1846, he moved to Tsuruoka where he lived until his death in 1875. Extant pieces feature skillful Takabori iroe, as well as Katakiribori and inlay. Signatures are particularly unique, done in the calligraphy style of Kameda Housai. Animal and bird motifs are common, and he likely drew influence from Tsuchiya Yasuchika. This piece features a dynamic tiger motif on a polished Suaka base, and is remarkably executed with Shishiaibori and Iroe inlay.
