Renjo, the 10th generation head of the mainline Goto family was born in 1628. His childhood name was Kameichi and he also used the name Genshiro before assuming the name Mitsutomo of the mainline Shirobei family. He subsequently became the 10th generation master in 1652 at the age of 25. While the Goto family had traditionally been based in Kyoto, Renjo relocated the family to Edo in 1662 where it remained until the 17th generation master Goto Tenjo. In 1683, he assumed the priesthood name Renjo at the age of 56, and continued work until retiring in Kyoto when his adopted son Mitsunobu (Tsujo) ascended as the 11th generation master 1697.
As a Fuchi Kashira, this piece is rare for a Goto work and is an excellent depiction of Bishamon attesting to the skill of the 10th generation Goto master.
