Yanagawa Naomasa was born in Edo in the 5th year of Genroku (1692) and originally went by the name Heijiro. He later changed his name to Sanzaemon. As an outstanding student of Yokoya Somin, many of his works closely resembled those of his master, and the Yanagawa School would carry on the style of the Yokoya tradition. Naoharu was the successor to Naomasa. Having lost his father soon after birth, he trained under Naomitsu and would become the third master of the school in the Kansei period. This elegant piece is a rare joint example bridging the relationship with father and son. The kashira was made by Naomasa and depicts a phoenix executed in detail. And the Fuchi by Naoharu shows skillfully carved paulownia motifs.
