Nakagawa Issho was the second son of Nakagawa Katsutsugu who worked in service of the Matsudaira family, lords of the Tsuyama clan in the Mimasaka region. With the given name Nakagawa Katsumi, he was also known as Naojiro and he traveled to Kyoto at the age of 21 to apprentice under Goto Ichijo. He received the character "Ichi" from is master at the age of 25 and assumed the name Issho. He returned to Tsuyama in the late 1850s, however with his younger brother taking over the Nakagawa family, Issho decided to move to Edo in 1860. Two years later, he modified a character in his name (pronounced the same).
This piece exhibits craftsmanship on par with his master Ichijo, with plum and a Torii remarkably executed in gold and silver inlay and Kousukibori, attesting to the outstanding skill of Issho. This work was previously in the Ryushido Collection, published in Taganenohana and with an inscription by Takao Ikeda.
