Ishiguro Masaaki studied under the first generation Ishiguro Masatsune, and together with his contemporary Masayoshi, was an exemplary master craftsman. He lived in the Kanda Matsushita district of Edo and used the artistic name Mokuzusai. The Ishiguro school is known for elegant depictions of flowers and birds in takabori with colored metals, and Masaaki was no exception with many masterpieces in his name. This piece incorporates Masaaki’s hallmark pheasant motif in remarkable detail and color, cleverly utilizing open space in an elegant composition.
