Goto Mitsumasa was the second son on Benjo, and became the 6th master of the Hanzaemon line following his father's death in the 4th year of Kaei (1851). Mitsumasa was the nephew of Ichijo and apprenticed under him, as well as under Mitsuakira in Edo, eventually rising to be one of the head instructors in the Ichijo school. This piece features a shibuichi base with geese in shakudo Suemon inlay, autumn leaves in flat inlay of gold and suaka, and the moon on the reverse in gold flat inlay. The geese form part of an elegant depiction of autumn by Mitsumasa.
Formerly part of the Ryushido collection, the piece is accompanied by a Hakogaki by Ikeda Takao.
