Iwamoto Konkan was born in Edo in the first year of Enkyo (1744) with the surname Asai. Following the early death of the fifth master Ryokan, Konkan subsequently ascended to the sixth head of the school. Despite the Iwamoto roots in the Yokoya School, Konkan embraced the carving techniques of Yasuchika from the Nara School, creating a unique aesthetic marrying the best of both traditions. This piece is a magnificent depiction of an egret and boat, done in Takabori Iroe on a polished Shakudo base. The use of space and overall composition attest to Konkan's mastery of the Edo stylistic taste.
