Iwamoto Konkan was born in Edo in the first year of Enkyo (1744) with the surname Asai. Following the early death of the fifth master Ryokan, Konkan subsequently ascended to the sixth head of the school. Despite the Iwamoto roots in the Yokoya School, Konkan embraced the carving techniques of Yasuchika from the Nara School, creating a unique aesthetic marrying the best of both traditions. Despite the simple design, this piece is an excellent example of Konkan's remarkable skill, incorporating a detailed execution of a pot hanger on a textured surface, and a unique pattered reverse.
