Kikuoka Mitsutoshi was a student of Yanagawa Naomitsu from the Yokoya line, and the younger brother of Mitsuyuki who established the Kikuoka School. He had the given name Saheiji and used a variation of the characters for Mitsutoshi in his youth. Artistic names included Nansensai and Senyu . A skilled poet, Mitsutoshi lived in the current Kanda district of Tokyo and passed away in 1863.
This work depicts a Shishi lion remarkably carved in gold, and well illustrates the Machibori lineage from the Yokoya, Yanagawa, and Kikuoka schools.
