Nakagawa Katsutsugu was originally from the Doi family. He was adopted by his predecessor, Katsumasa, and succeeded to the family profession, later becoming a retained craftsman of the
Sakushu Matsudaira family. He studied carving techniques under Yasuda Hojo in Edo for two years.
His sons included Shoami Katsuyoshi, Nakagawa Issho, and Nakagawa Itteki.
This work is executed in Shakudo Nanakojii, finely carved with Sekirei (wagtails) amid flowing water. The superb quality of its carving is comparable to that of his three sons, and this is a rare and valuable surviving work by Katsutsugu.
