Nishigaki Kanshiro was born in 1613 in the Nakatsu area of Buzen Provice as the son of a priest. He studied under Hirata Hikozo, and with the blessing of his master to succeed the lineage, he began to independently work for the Hosokawa family receiving a stipend of 20 bales of rice. Kanshiro was a contemporary of Hayashi Matashichi and employed similar materials and stylistic characteristics, although there are differences in expression with Kanshiro incorporating a sense of elegance versus a sense of class in Matashichi. This piece incorporates a paulownia crest motif executed in cut-out Sukashi on a soft iron base, and is an excellent example by the first generation Kanshiro.
