Nakagawa Issho was the second son of Nakagawa Katsutsugu and worked in service of the Matsudaira family, lords of the Tsuyama clan in the Mimasaka region. His original name was Katsumi, and he also used the name Naojiro.
At the age of 21, he entered apprenticeship under Goto Ichijo in Kyoto, and received the character “Ichi” from his mater at the age of 25 in recognition of his skill. Assuming the name Issho, he returned to Tsuyama in the late 1850s. However, with his younger brother Katsuyoshi taking over the Nakagawa family, Issho moved to Edo in 1860 and modified a character in his name (pronounced the same).
This piece elegantly depicts autumn grass and insects with Shakudo and silver on a gold base and is representative of Issho’s skill.
