Wada Isshin was born in 1814 and initially used the name Masataka apprenticing under Fujiki Kyubei. The sword dealer Sawada Chubei later recognized his talent and introduced him to Goto Ichijo where he would apprentice and eventually earn the character "Ichi" from his master, subsequently changing his name to Isshin. Isshin came from a cultured upbringing with his family studying medicine, and he himself learned Waka poetry and the Gekkin traditional Chinese musical instrument.
This piece displays a scene from the tale of Urashima Taro executed on a Shakudo Nanako base. The reverse is done in Shibuichi with a detailed depiction of Ryugu castle and well reflects Isshin's spirit and an artist.
