Goto Ichijo was the last great master of the Goto family. He was born in Kyoto in 1791 (Kansei 3) as the son of Jujo (the fourth head of the Shichiroemon branch of the Goto family). His elder brother was Zejo Mitsuhiro, and his younger brother was Kyujo Mitsuaki. At the age of 9, he was adopted by Kenjo of the Hachirobei line, and at eleven he studied metal carving under Kijo. When he was 15, he succeeded to the headship of the Hachirobei family upon the death of his adoptive father. He first used the name Mitsutaka, then Mitsuyuki, and later Mitsuyo. In 1824(Bunsei 7), at the age of 34, he
was granted the title Hokyo in recognition of his work producing sword fittings for the imperial swords of Emperor Kokaku. At that time he took Buddhist vows and adopted the art name Ichijo. In 1862 (Bunkyū 2), he produced sword fittings for the ceremonial tachi of Emperor Komei, and in the following year he was promoted to the rank of Hogen.
He died in 1876 (Meiji 9) at the age of 86.
In this work, the front is executed in Takabori with colored-metal inlays on a Shakudo Nanako ground, depicting cranes flying above waves with remarkable vitality. The reverse is carved in Katakiribori on a silver ground, showing a flock of cranes in flight. The minute and meticulous treatment of every detail clearly demonstrates Ichijo's
extraordinary technical skill and refined artistic dignity.
