Hisanori (1725-1795) was a Samurai of the Moriyama Domain, a branch domain of the Mito
Tokugawa family. He studied metal carving under Omori Teruhide, one of the foremost masters of the Omori school. According to the Moriyama Hanshi Ryakuden (Brief Biographies of the Retainers of the Moriyama Domain), he was "gentle and sincere by
nature, yet strict in discipline," and served the thirdlord Matsudaira Yorihiro and the fourth lord Yorisuke as a page, receiving a stipend of thirty koku.
Proud of his status as a warrior, Hisanori devoted himself to the art of metal carving. His exquisitely detailed and richly decorative inlay work attained a level of originality that earned widespread acclaim. He excelled particularly in the depiction of birds and human figures, and this work is an outstanding example of his characteristic style. The base metal is unusually thick and generously modeled, while the hen's head is sculpted in full relief extending through to the reverse side, creating exceptional three-dimensionality. The composition is imbued with such vitality that the birds appear almost ready to spring to life.
