Chizuka Hisanori (1725 – 1795) was a retainer of the Moriyama clan, a branch of Mito, and learned metalcraft from Omori Teruhide. Chronicles of the Moriyama clan note that he had a warm yet strict personality, and closely served both the third lord Yorihiro and fourth lord Yoriakira receiving a stipend of 30 koku. Natsuo’s studies of metalcraft particularly applaud Hisanori’s work, noting his careful use of color and precision inlay. Hisanori is particularly known for human figures, as well as birds including peacocks and phoenixes. His menuki have a think and round appearance, with details as the faces of birds rounded adding to a three dimensional depth. This piece is a typical work exhibiting colored inlay, and a deep rounded appearance, and well attests to Hisanori’s skill.
