Hirata Donin was well known for expressing the artistic beauty of the Momoyma Period in the form of cloisonné sword fittings. At the time, cloisonné was an innovative art style sometimes utilized in architectural ornamentation as seen at Fushimi Castle and Jurakutei. In his later years, Donin was employed by the Shogunate, working for Tokugawa Ieyasu. The art of cloisonné was passed from generation to generation, and the Hirata family continued to be highly regarded in service of the Tokugawa Shogunate until the Meiji period. This piece is an excellent depiction of fugakuzu executed with cloisonné inlay in the hallmark style of the first generation Donin.
