The first generation Hamano Noriyuki was the apprentice of Hamano Shozui, an exceptional artist in the Nara School of Edo metal craftsmen. Together with his adopted son, the second generation Noriyuki, he was considered one of the most representative artists of the school. This piece incorporates a shibuichi base and shallow Usunikubori carving technique with multiple colors in a unique and skillful depiction of Hotei and Karako. The facial area is done in particularly high relief characteristic of this school, and well represents the skill of the first generation Noriyuki at the peak of his career.
