Teijo Mitsumasa was born in Kyoto in 1603 and was the son of the seventh generation mainline Goto master Kenjo. In 1636 he became the 9th generation mainline master, and later changed his name to Teijo in 1646. Interestingly, he changed the character used in his name from 鋥 to 程 in 1649. In 1652, he relinquished leadership of the family to Renjo, and subsequently entered service of the Maeda family where he lead development of the Kaga metal craftsmen. This piece is a remarkable depiction of Ushiwakamaru and Benkei at the Gojo Ohashi bridge and conveys a unique appeal for the warriors of the time.
