The 9th Goto master Teijo was the second son of the 7th master Kenjo and was born in 1603. In 1625, at the age of 22, he assumed the name Rihei Mitsumasa and became the second master of the Rihei branch family. In the same year, his father Masatsugu entered priesthood assuming the name Kenjo. A few years later, the 8th Goto master Mitsushige (Sokujo) passed away at the age of 32, and since the next heredity master Kameichi (Renjo) was still 4 years old, Kenjo temporarily took over the mainline family, and Teijo subsequently became the 9th master. When Renjo became 18, Teijo passed the reigns of the family to him as the 10th master, and continued to watch over him until he became 25. Teijo also worked for the Maeda family of Kaga alternating service with Kakujo’s son Enjo, and contributed much to the rich culture of Kaga. This piece was attributed to the 9th master Teijo by the 16th master Mitsuakira who inscribed the piece and issued an origami certificate. The motif of fans and evening glories is rich with expression and magnificently carved with an elegance commensurate with mainline Goto.
