Minayama Ouki, who was also known as Naoichi, was a student of Otsuki Mitsuoki and lived in the Nijo area of Kyoto. He initially signed his works with Oukou, but later changed his name to Ouki, and also used the artistic names Reibokudo and Chikuhoudo. In addition to Ouki, Otsuki Mitsuoki's students included renown artisans as Otsuki Mitsuhiro, Kawaharabayashi Hideoki, Tenkodo Hidekuni, Matsuo Gassan, and others. This piece depicts the Narihira Azuma Kudari scene from the Ise Monogatari, and features Narihira on horseback gazing at the white clouds of Mt Fuji. It is done with Shakudo, Suaka, and other colored alloys on a kinmuku base with elegant attention to detail in the kimono, face, hands, and feet, and is an outstanding example of Ouki's work.
