Iwama Masayoshi was born in 1764 and lived in the Shitaya area of Edo. He was a student of Toyama Naoyuki, and at the age of 20, he was allowed to use the "nao" character from his teacher assuming the name Naoyasu. He also studied under Masanobu of the Hamano School. Aspiring to the works of Nara Toshinaga and Miboku Shozui, he borrowed characters from both masters' names signing Toshizumi in his later years. He was especially skilled at brilliant Takabori executions of people done in the style of Shozui.

This piece features nio depicted with Sukidashi Takabori, gold, Suaka, and Shakudo inlay on a polished Shibuichi base. The lively depiction is remarkably refined, showcasing the skill of Seiro.
